TRENTON – The Attorney General’s Office today released all video recordings related to an incident in which inmates were assaulted and seriously injured at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in the early morning of Jan. 12, 2021.

A total of 10 corrections officers have been charged in the ongoing criminal investigation of the incident by the Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) and the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office, conducted with the assistance of the New Jersey Department of Corrections (DOC) Special Investigations Division.

In light of the Supreme Court’s Order issued late this afternoon, the Attorney General’s Office is releasing the video recordings at this time. They are being released in response to OPRA requests and pursuant to policies established by the Attorney General in 2019 that are designed to promote the fair, impartial, and transparent investigation of use of force incidents involving law enforcement officers.

Between approximately 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 11 and 1:15 a.m. on Jan. 12, 2021, DOC officers and supervisors assigned to the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility (EMCF) in Clinton, N.J., conducted forced cell extractions of inmates located in the Restorative Housing Unit (RHU) complex.

During the cell extractions, certain DOC officers were assigned to record the extractions using hand-held cameras. The 10 video recordings being released today include five recordings made with hand-held cameras related to extractions of five different inmates. The recordings also include five video clips from a stationary surveillance camera in the hallway outside of the cells where the extractions occurred.

The recordings are posted online: Click here for recordings.
