Dr. William R. Wolfe, 52, of Marlton, entered into a Consent Order with the Board of Medical Examiners, as both parties agreed to a temporary suspension of his license and his New Jersey registration to dispense CDS. Wolfe signed the order shortly after his arrest by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday.
“This doctor is accused of prescribing highly addictive pain medications and other narcotics to patients who had no legitimate medical need for them, allegations we take very seriously,” said Acting Attorney General Robert Lougy. “By moving quickly, the Board has ensured he will be unable to practice medicine or write prescriptions until further order of the Board.”
Wolfe, who has a private practice in Voorhees, was charged with two counts of distribution of controlled dangerous substance and was released on his own recognizance. His arrest is the culmination of a year-long investigation during which Wolfe allegedly indiscriminately prescribed narcotics to undercover investigators posing as patients. In addition, Wolfe is alleged to have provided blank signed prescriptions to an office staff member who in turn sold or gave them to multiple individuals including an undercover investigator. In at least one instance the staff member gave numerous prescriptions, in various patient names, to a friend as payment for his help in taking care of automobile repairs.
“The Division of Consumer Affairs partnered with federal investigators, county prosecutors offices, and local police departments to stop Dr. Wolfe’s alleged indiscriminate, over-prescription of CDS,” said Steve Lee, Acting Director of the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. “The suspension of his license will ensure that the public is protected as the criminal case moves forward.”
Deputy Attorney General Jillian Sauchelli is representing the State in this matter. The investigation was conducted by the Division of Consumer Affairs’ Enforcement Bureau, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, the Gloucester Township Police Department, and the Voorhees Township Police Department.
