NEWARK – The State Board of Pharmacy (Board) has proposed new rules on remote processing of prescriptions that set forth the requirements for a pharmacy to have licensed pharmacists and registered pharmacy technicians perform limited functions at a location other than a pharmacy. The Board believes that the proposed rules will provide pharmacies greater flexibility in managing prescription processing operations.

Approximately 124 pharmacies are currently engaged in Board-approved pilot programs to perform certain pharmaceutical functions at remote locations. The Board is proposing regulations based upon its experience with these pilot programs, taking into consideration the regulations of other states that allow for the remote processing of prescriptions and input from members of the regulated community. The proposal, however, does not allow the storing or dispensing of any medication at the remote location. The proposed rules will ensure that any prescription processing functions performed at a remote location are performed by qualified and appropriately trained individuals pursuant to safeguards designed to protect the confidentiality of prescription and patient information.

The proposed regulation, and information on how to submit a comment by July 1, 2022 can be viewed here.
