Reported Bias Incident Data

The NJ Office of the Attorney General has made combating bias and hate a top priority and is committed to using every tool and resource available to tackle this problem to ensure that all New Jerseyans are safe and free to live without fear. The Department of Law and Public Safety continues to work tirelessly to address the steady rise in reported bias incidents through criminal prosecution, civil enforcement, education, training, outreach, and transparency.

Reporting bias incidents in New Jersey is conducted pursuant to protocols known as Bias Incident Investigation Standards. These Standards clarify the procedures for investigating and reporting bias incidents. The Standards require that all law enforcement agencies report all suspected or confirmed bias incidents through the Electronic Uniform Crime Reporting (eUCR) system as soon as practicable, but not more than 24 hours from the initial law enforcement response. Once reported, each bias incident is reviewed by law enforcement at many levels, including the local police department, New Jersey State Police, the County Prosecutor’s Office, the Office of Homeland Security & Preparedness, and the Office of the Attorney General. These layers of review ensure that bias incidents are investigated thoroughly, properly, and promptly. The information displayed below depict these reported bias incidents.
