Each year, Congress declares one week in April as Crime Victims’ Rights Week to honor and recognize crime victims and those who assist them. This year, the Department of Justice, Office for Victims’ of Crime declared April 23 – 29, 2023 as National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.

The 2023 theme — Survivor Voices: Elevate. Engage. Effect Change.  This year’s theme calls upon communities to amplify the voices of survivors and create environments where survivors have the confidence that they will be heard, believed, and supported.

The Division of Violence Intervention and Victim Assistance, the Division of Criminal Justice, State Office of Victim Witness Advocacy and the Victims of Crime Compensation Office is honored to host New Jersey’s Crime Victims’ Rights Week live event on Friday, April 28, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The ceremony will be followed by training workshops that begin at 1:00 pm.

Training Workshops:

VCCO Today: Law Changes
The VCCO workshop will provide an overview on the eligibility and compensation requirements for VCCO benefits. Trainers will provide instruction on how to file an online claim and discuss the necessary documentation to expedite victim compensation claims for each benefit. This workshop will engage its participants by providing claim scenarios to each group and having an open discussion on how claim determinations were made. This workshop will focus on the most recent statutory and regulatory changes and how they are applied when reviewing and investigating VCCO claims. Handouts will be provided to all participants.

VIVA: Redefining Victim Services
This workshop will provide an overview of the various community violence intervention/prevention programs supported, in part, by the Department of Law and Public Safety. Attendees will learn about the important roles intervention/prevention programs have in keeping communities safe. The workshop will introduce attendees to organizations implementing community violence intervention strategies throughout the State. Lastly, this workshop will summarize the importance of communities being informed and working together to prevent community violence.

We hope you will join us in honoring all victims of crime, thanking the many individuals who support them through vital services, and highlighting the role law enforcement plays in securing them justice.
