About DCR | Community Relations Unit (DRAFT)

Community Relations Unit

The Community Relations Unit (affectionately referred to as “CRU”) of DCR is focused on proactively preventing acts of discrimination and bias-based harassment through education and community engagement. Through Governor Murphy’s Executive Order 188, CRU, also serves as the Crisis Response Unit tasked with responding after a civil rights incident occurs in New Jersey. CRU develops community need specific programs and works with different communities and different stakeholders to plan conferences, town halls, and other public facing events to prevent bias and discrimination.

What We Believe

The mission of DCR is to:
prevent, eliminate and remedy discrimination and bias-based harassment in employment, housing, and places of public accommodation throughout New Jersey.

DCR’s vision is:
A New Jersey free from discrimination and bias where all people are treated with equal dignity and equal respect and have access to equal opportunity.

How We Do The Work

  • We value and build caring and trusting relationships.
  • We create safe welcoming spaces, centered in anti-racism and trauma informed practices.
  • We inspire growth and change through engaging activities.
  • We have high expectations around equity, partnerships, and collaboration.
  • We promote opportunities for contributions and leadership.
  • We offer paths forward through connections and consistency.
  • We invest in a strong mission-driven organizational structure.

Bold Leadership

We face deeply rooted inequality and confront those challenges head on through strong leadership, innovative programs, and advocacy for positive change.

Responsiveness

We listen deeply to and respect community members whom we work. In New Jersey neighborhoods with few resources, we do what it takes to respond, and have built the ability to adapt into our approach.

Learning

We prioritize ongoing education for both ourselves and our participants. We constantly seek out new ways to be effective and use evidence and data to help us be successful.

Commitment

Our support for all people is unwavering, especially in New Jersey neighborhoods that have the fewest resources regardless of immigration status.

Compassion

The services we provide surround all people with kindness and care, build on their strengths, and embrace unique talents, interests, and accomplishments.

Optimism

We know we can make a real difference with a positive approach that builds upon the inherent strengths that people have to transform themselves.
